Girls Empowerment Network is a registered youth NGO founded and led by young women in Malawi. It was formed in 2007 and currently operates in Blantyre, Malawi. Soaring HIV/AIDS infection rates among girls and young women, in the age category of 14-29 years, high incidence of violence against girls, high maternal mortality due to early pregnancies, and unsafe abortions prompted the formation of Girls Empowerment Network organization.
Our aim is to strengthen the role and contribution of girls to socio-economic development, HIV/AIDS prevention, violence against women reduction, equality, and human rights. We provide a channel through which girls can reach one another and share real life experiences and information and also to explore sustainable ways and means to overcome their challenges.
Our goal is to create a nation where empowered girls and young women are free to exercise their rights and live peacefully in a just, humane and equitable society.
Mission
Our mission is to promote and advocate for social and emotional well being of vulnerable and marginalized adolescent girls, teen mother and young women and to influence positive change in the areas of gender, human rights, HIV/Aids and education. We believe that encouraging the leadership of women, their participation and the development of their status benefits the entire community.
